It is recommended that you visit your local Valencia, California, dentist twice a year for a routine professional teeth cleaning and dental examination. If you have been avoiding the dentist because you haven’t been in a long time, fear that a dental cleaning will hurt, or have some other form of dental anxiety or fear, we are happy to tell you that a routine cleaning and exam is not painful. Everything will be done by Dr. Brian Gradinger, DMD, to ensure that your visit is as comfortable as possible.
You brush twice a day, and make sure to floss daily. You also rinse with an ADA-approved mouthwash. In your mind, being diligent about these tasks means your mouth is as clean as it needs to be, and unless you experience an oral health issue or experience pain, there is no need to see the dentist. These tasks, which form your at-home oral hygiene routine, are only a part of what will keep your mouth healthy.
There are many areas of your mouth and teeth where the bristles of your toothbrush and even floss will not be able to reach well (or at all). Plaque will begin to build and, over time, turn into hardened tartar. The only way to avoid this is to visit your dentist twice a year so these areas of your mouth can be thoroughly cleaned and inspected to make sure there is no lingering plaque or tartar, which could lead to painful tooth decay or gum disease.
When you visit your dentist for your cleaning, an exam will also be performed. These exams are critical as any developing oral health issues can be detected at their earliest stages and treated before they worsen, cause pain, and require more intensive (and more expensive!) dental treatments. Signs of decay, gum disease, and even oral cancer will be looked for during your dental exam.
