Why patients choose fixed bridges for replacing missing teeth

Dr. Brian Gradinger of Valencia, California, helps patients restore their smiles when teeth are missing or extracted. While there are many options available for replacing missing teeth, many patients will find the fixed dental bridge to be a viable solution.

What are fixed dental bridges?

The fixed dental bridge is a non-removable appliance created to replace one or more teeth in a row. It helps “bridge the gap” by using false teeth fused to crowns on each side. The crowns bond over adjacent teeth or implants to create the final repair. Dental bridges can be used on the front or back teeth, depending on the patient’s needs, and may be implant-supported.

Why patients might choose dental bridges

Fixed dental bridges may be suitable for you. These restorations are:

  • Affordable
  • Effective
  • Fixed/permanent

Implant Bridges

  • Patient came to our office with failing existing bridges/cavities/root canals
  • We discussed all options for the patient – she did not want to patch things together and instead preferred for the best long term option available.
  • Together, we decided that removable dentures were not an option for this patient’s lifestyle, and due to the fact that there were already many missing teeth, dental implants were the best choice.
  • She wanted something that was non-removable and instead stayed inside her mouth.
  • We placed 4 dental implants and used them to retain 2 separate bridges. Replacing 8 teeth total!!!

What can I expect when getting a dental bridge?

Dental bridges require at least two appointments. During the initial evaluation, patients will determine if dental bridges are a reliable option for their unique needs.

The anchoring teeth are prepared with the removal of enamel to make room for the side crowns. Impressions are created and then sent to a ceramist to create the final restoration. Patients will return to have the bridge bonded over the adjacent teeth or implants to complete the process.

How do I find out if I am a good fit for a permanent bridge?

During a consultation appointment with Dr. Brian Gradinger, we encourage you to ask questions about this and other options for the smile. The fixed dental bridge is a popular choice as it is more permanent than a partial denture but less expensive than dental implants. Many patients will also find that a dental bridge can cost less when applying for dental insurance benefits, making it an economical option for most.
