Are there any disadvantages that come with your dental cleaning appointment and oral examination? NO, you simply won’t find any. Getting your teeth cleaned and examined is one of the most important things you can do for your oral health. While some believe that brushing, flossing, and regularly rinsing from home is enough to maintain good oral health, Dr. Brian Gradinger, DMD, Valencia, California, would like to tell you why you should schedule your twice-a-year cleaning and examination if you have not done so already.
When you brush and floss your teeth, there are areas that are not being cleaned as well as they could be. While brushing and flossing are very important, you will need some extra help getting into these areas that are not reachable. This help comes in the form of dental cleaning. Your dentist and dental hygienist will clean any built-up plaque so it does not turn into hard tartar along the gumline.
When you see your dentist regularly, they can detect developing oral health situations. A great example of this is tooth decay. You go in for a teeth cleaning and exam, and your dentist tells you that there is some decay that needs to be cleared and cleaned. This creates a cavity that must be filled with a composite filling material. Nice and easy, and relatively cheap. Now let us look at a situation where you do not see your dentist regularly. The decay develops and goes untreated until you are in significant pain. You finally see your dentist, and the decay is so bad that a root canal is required! Once your tooth gets the root canal, you may need a crown to cap the weakened tooth. This not only means that your tooth is compromised, but you are looking at a much larger bill and multiple appointments.
